2022-12-09 Basic engineering experiment “Identification fluorescent dye synthesis ~Synthesis experiment~”

Today, we will be introducing the "Basic Engineering Experiments" being carried out by first-year students in the Department of Applied Chemistry Faculty of Engineering.
The theme is "Identification Fluorescent Dye Synthesis."
We often hear the word "fluorescent" used in fluorescent pens, fluorescent lights, etc., but how does "fluorescent" work?
Fluorescence is the light emitted when a substance returns to its original state after being put into a high-energy state (excited state) due to light stimulation, a chemical reaction, or an electric field.
One is applied to everyday things such as liquid crystal displays and bleach that makes laundry look white.
In the class, Wang shines a black light on everyday objects and observes the presence or absence of fluorescence and the color in order to learn that fluorescent dyes are contained in everyday objects.
Huh? Hakken and Koken 's face is also glowing pale blue.
That means... it contains fluorescent dye!?
I didn't know that.

The second photo is of a substance that contains fluorescent dyes.

Next is a fluorescent material synthesis experiment.

As shown in photos 3 to 6, after synthesizing the fluorescent substances phenolphthalein and fluorescein, Wang evaluates the liquid properties by observing them under a black light as shown in photos 7 and 8.

``Fluorescein'' is used in highlighters, etc., and ``phenolphthalein'' is used as an indicator to distinguish between acids and alkalis.

Next week, we'll be introducing a "forensic" experiment!
